How to patch test a new skincare product

A swirl of white cream

Even gentle, fragrance-free products can disagree with some skin. A patch test takes a day and can save you a week of irritation.

How to do it

Wash and dry a small area on the inside of your forearm or just behind the ear. Apply a little of the product the way you would use it, and leave it for 24 hours.

What to look for

Redness, itching, burning or small bumps. If you see any of them, wash the area and do not use the product on your face.

Then try a small area of the face

If nothing happens, use it on one cheek for two or three days before using it everywhere.

When to see a doctor

If a reaction is strong, spreads or does not settle within a day, stop and see a dermatologist. Take the product with you so they can read the ingredients.
